Brooklyn, NY: Metropolitan Hilarion leads Patronal Feast Day of Holy New Martyrs Church

On Saturday the 8th and Sunday the 9th of February, the Sunday of the Holy New Martyrs & Confessors of Russia, parishioners of Holy New Martyrs Church in Brooklyn, NY marked their patronal feast day. Clerics from neighboring parishes came and joined their brother clergy, jointly serving the All-Night Vigil and Divine Liturgy.

On Saturday evening, parish rector Archpriest Serge Lukianov led the Vigil, co-served by Archpriest George Kallaur (rector of the Church of our Lady "Unexpected Joy" on Staten Island, NY), Hieromonk Alexander (Frizzell; dean of Holy Cross Monastery in Wayne, WV), Archpriest Petro Kunitsky (parish cleric), Priest Vitaliy Lalyukov, Priest Konstantin Gavrilkin (parish cleric), and clerics of St. George’s Church in Howell, NJ: Priest Vladimir Kaydanov, Protodeacon Leonid Roschko, and Deacon Michael Wengrin. Upon completion of the Vigil, the Athonite prayer of repentance was read, and the seven priests confessed all those present.

The following morning, the Divine Liturgy was celebrated by the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad, His Eminence Hilarion, Metropolitan of Eastern America & New York. Accompanying His Eminence was an exalted guest – the Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God, Protectress of the Russian Diaspora, under whose aegis the feast day prayerfully progressed. The Metropolitan was co-served by the above-mentioned clergy, as well as other clerics from parishes in the Greater New York area.

Prior to the start of Liturgy, parish Reader Alexandr Shulkin was ordained a subdeacon, while at the Little Entrance, Fr. Konstantin Gavrilkin was awarded the nabedrennik and kamilavka. Two special prayers were read at Liturgy – a special petition at the Augmente Litany beseeching peace in Ukraine, followed by a prayer intoned to the Holy New Martyrs & Confessors of Russia. Thefaithful were communed from three chalices.

Upon completion of the Liturgy, Metropolitan Hilarion greeted the parishioners on the occasion of their patronal feast day, after which Archpriest Alexander Belya (New York City dean) congratulated all those present. Fr. Serge sincerely thanked His Eminence and his brother clergy for coming to share in the joy of the triumph of the Russian land’s new intercessors. In honor of her many years of service to the parish, diocesan Gramota was awarded to the parish’s head sister, Nina Shumeev, and the new Subdeacon Alexander received an icon of the Holy New Martyrs. Special thanks were expressed to Fr. George and Mat. Tatiana Kallaur, who founded the parish and labored exceptionally to get it on its feet; the couple was presented with a diocesan Gramota and an icon of the Holy New Martyrs with a commemorative plaque.

A bountiful luncheon was offered in the parish hall, during which the "Three Tenors," visiting from Moscow, delighted parishioners with a concert of Russian folk music. Parishioners and guests were also treated to a concert by the parish school’s children’s choir.
